If your jaw aches on waking, clicks when you bite into a sandwich, or leaves you with tension headaches by mid-afternoon, it is worth having the joint looked at by someone who studies how teeth and jaws work together. At Premiere Orthodontics, Dr. Jason Battle, a board-certified orthodontist, evaluates jaw pain for adults, teens and families from our office at 5733 Canton Cv, just off SR 417 near where Tuskawilla Rd meets Red Bug Lake Rd.
What the temporomandibular joint does
You have two temporomandibular joints, one just in front of each ear. They connect the lower jaw to the skull and move every time you chew, talk or yawn. Each joint has a small disc inside it and a group of muscles around it. When the joint, the disc and the muscles stop moving together comfortably, the result is called TMJ disorder, often shortened to TMD or TMJ-D.
Because the joint works constantly, even a small problem can become hard to ignore. Stress-related clenching or grinding, often at night, or a bite that lands unevenly can all add up over months until the area stays sore.
Symptoms Winter Springs patients describe
TMD does not look the same in every person. These are the signs we hear about most often:
- Jaw tenderness or aching, often worst in the morning
- Clicking, popping or a grating sound when opening and closing
- A jaw that catches, sticks or locks open or shut
- Tired, sore chewing and facial muscles
- Headaches, earaches or pressure at the temples
- Tension through the neck and shoulders
- Discomfort chewing tougher foods
- A bite that suddenly feels different
Symptoms tend to build gradually. Changes caught early are usually simpler to manage than ones that have been present for years, so a few of these signs is reason enough to schedule an evaluation.
Why jaw pain develops
There is rarely one single cause. More often several factors stack on top of each other until the joint carries more strain than it can handle comfortably. Common contributors include clenching and grinding (bruxism), which is frequently tied to stress and often happens during sleep; a bite that does not meet evenly, so the jaw keeps compensating; an injury to the face, jaw or neck; arthritis affecting the joint surfaces; a displaced disc inside the joint; and habits such as nail biting, heavy gum chewing or always chewing on one side.
Since those causes overlap, the assessment matters as much as the treatment itself. Dr. Battle looks at joint movement, bite relationship, muscle tenderness and your history together before suggesting any course of care, which is the core of how we approach TMJ and TMD treatment at both offices.
How a jaw evaluation works at our office
Your first visit is a complimentary consultation, and it is fully digital, with no putty impressions. It usually includes:
- A conversation about your symptoms, daily habits and health history
- A hands-on check of joint movement, range of motion and tender spots
- Digital photos and low-radiation digital imaging
- A 3D scan of your teeth and bite
- An analysis of how your teeth come together
When a closer look at the joints and surrounding structures is helpful, our office uses 3D cone beam imaging, one of several tools described under our orthodontic technology. You leave knowing what we found, what is likely contributing to it, which options make sense and what they would cost, written down so you can review it at home.
Treatment options matched to the cause
Correcting the bite
When uneven bite forces are part of the problem, moving the teeth and jaws into a balanced relationship can take pressure off the joint. Depending on your preferences, that might mean metal braces, ceramic braces or Invisalign clear aligners. Our practice charges the same price for every treatment option, so the choice can be about comfort and lifestyle.
Custom nightguards and splints
For people who grind or clench, a custom appliance protects the teeth and gives the muscles a chance to relax while the joint settles down.
At-home care
Soft foods, gentle stretches, moist heat, simple jaw exercises and paying attention to habits can noticeably reduce daily discomfort. We coach you through these steps.
Growth guidance for younger patients
In children and teens, jaw development and breathing are closely tied to joint comfort, which is why some cases include dentofacial orthopedics or airway orthodontics as part of the plan.
Team care when it helps
Some jaw problems call for more than orthodontics. In those cases we coordinate with dentists, ENTs, oral surgeons and physical therapists. We begin with the most conservative approach that can do the job, and we will tell you plainly if orthodontics is not the right answer.
Getting care close to home in Seminole County
Jaw pain tends to flare at inconvenient times, so it helps to have an orthodontist nearby. Our Canton Cv office is a short trip for families in Tuskawilla, Glen Eagle and Barrington Estates, and it is easy to reach from Oviedo, Casselberry and the UCF area by way of SR 417. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If braces or aligners become part of your plan, DentalMonitoring virtual check-ins can replace some in-office visits, which matters when you are balancing work, school pickups and appointments.
TMJ Treatment FAQ
Can braces or Invisalign fix TMJ disorder?
Sometimes. When the strain comes from the way the teeth and jaws meet, correcting that relationship can relieve symptoms and keep the joint from being overloaded over the long term. When the source is arthritis, an old injury or the muscles alone, orthodontics may be one part of the plan rather than the whole answer.
Do I need a diagnosis before I call?
No. Figuring out what is behind your symptoms is our job. Call (407) 699-1200 and describe what you are feeling, and we will find a time for an evaluation.
Is the first visit expensive?
The consultation is complimentary and carries no obligation. If treatment follows, we accept most insurance plans and offer zero-interest in-house financing with low or no down payment.
Schedule a jaw evaluation
