The day braces come off or the last aligner tray goes in the case feels like the finish line. In orthodontics, it is really the start of the stage that protects everything you just accomplished. At Premiere Orthodontics, Dr. Jason Battle, a board-certified orthodontist with more than 20 years of experience, guides Winter Springs patients through retention so their new alignment stays put for the long run.
Why teeth need a retainer after treatment
Teeth are held in place by bone and gum tissue that keep adapting after active treatment ends. Right after braces or aligners, that support is still settling, and teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward where they started. Orthodontists call that drift orthodontic relapse. A retainer holds each tooth in its corrected position while the surrounding tissue stabilizes, and it keeps holding them as the mouth continues to change over a lifetime.
That is why we describe retention as the final and most important phase of care, whether you finished with braces or clear aligners.
How long you will wear it
The schedule is simple to remember:
- For the first two months after treatment, wear your retainer full-time.
- After those two months, switch to wearing it at night only.
- Keep up nightly wear indefinitely, because teeth can shift at any age.
Families sometimes ask why “indefinitely” is necessary if the teeth look perfect. The answer is that the forces of chewing, growth and aging never fully stop, so nighttime wear is the easiest insurance against slow movement.
Removable and fixed retainer options
Hawley retainers
A Hawley retainer combines metal wires with an acrylic piece that rests against the roof of the mouth. It comes out for eating, brushing and cleaning.
Essix retainers
An Essix retainer is a clear plastic tray, custom-made to cover the front and back surfaces of the teeth. It looks similar to an aligner and is also removable.
Bonded (permanent) retainers
A fixed retainer is a thin custom wire bonded behind the teeth, most often the lower front teeth, though it can be placed behind the upper teeth when a case calls for it. Only your orthodontist can remove it. Typically it stays in place for good. The exception is when your family dentist finds that hygiene around the wire is suffering in a way that could lead to gum or bone problems, so careful brushing and flossing around it matters.
Dr. Battle and our team will help you choose the type that best fits your needs for your retainer fitting.
How our Lifetime Guarantee connects to your retainer
Premiere Orthodontics backs finished results with a Lifetime Guarantee, and it is worth understanding exactly what it covers. If you complete a full course of orthodontic treatment with us and your teeth later shift back because the retainer was not worn, Dr. Battle will replace your braces. Your financial responsibility in that situation is limited to a nominal monthly charge for adjustments plus the cost of a new retainer.
In other words, the guarantee is a safety net for life getting busy, not a substitute for retention. We still hope every patient wears a retainer as directed, because that is what keeps a smile straight without a second round of treatment. Parents of teen orthodontic patients at Oviedo High School or Milwee Middle School can have peace of mind that their children’s results are backed by a lifetime guarantee.
Patients who finish full treatment with us also receive free professional teeth whitening for life.
Daily care that keeps a retainer working
A warped or dirty retainer cannot do its job. A few habits make a big difference:
- Keep it away from heat. No dishwasher, no hot water, and never leave it in a parked car, which matters in a Florida summer.
- Keep it away from pets, who love to chew them.
- Put it in its case every time it leaves your mouth.
- Clean it whenever you brush, using mild dish soap and an extra-soft toothbrush, then rinse well.
- Soak it a few times a week in a retainer cleaning solution to disinfect it.
- Wash the case regularly with mild soap and lukewarm water.
Retainer material is slightly porous, and plaque likes to cling to it, so rinsing before and after wear helps keep it fresh.
Lost or broken retainers in Winter Springs
One custom retainer is included in your treatment plan. If yours goes missing or breaks, a replacement fee applies, and timing matters more than anything else. Do not force a bent retainer back into your mouth, since a misshapen appliance can irritate tissue. Place it in a bag, call us at (407) 699-1200, and we will get you in as soon as possible so your teeth do not have time to drift. Our office at 5733 Canton Cv, near Red Bug Elementary School, is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and urgent appliance problems are also covered under orthodontic emergencies.
Families from Avery Park, Bear Creek Estates and Stable Gable, along with patients coming from Chuluota and Winter Park, can reach our office off SR 417, near Tuskawilla Rd and Red Bug Lake Rd.
Retainers FAQ
What happens if I skip my retainer for a while?
Teeth can start moving within a short time. If a retainer suddenly feels tight, call us so Dr. Battle can check the fit rather than forcing it back in.
Do I still need a retainer after Invisalign?
Yes. Aligner patients follow the same retention schedule as braces patients, because teeth moved by clear trays are just as prone to relapse.
Is a permanent retainer better than a removable one?
Neither is better for everyone. Fixed wires do not depend on remembering to wear them, while removable retainers are easier to clean. The right choice depends on your bite and hygiene.
